Professor Ramesh investigates the micromechanisms of failure in composite materials under dynamic loading; tribology, high-pressure rheology; elastohydrodynamic lubrication; dynamic plasticity; high strain rate experiments; constitutive modeling; and biomimetics and active materials.

Prof. Ramesh's research programs apply mechanics and materials science concepts to understand the physics of dynamic deformations. In particular, his research explores the experimental determination of the mechanical properties of materials at the macroscopic level and then interprets observed macroscopic behaviors in terms of phenomena at the microphysical level. His laboratories contain equipment to generate dynamic deformations, laser interferometers for very high speed measurements, and data acquisition and recording facilities featuring sub-nanosecond resolution.

Current research projects include the mechanics and kinetics of deformation twinning, shear bands, the compaction of particulate materials, and artifical muscle materials.
