Dr. Poehler's primary research interests are in the structure, transport, and optical properties of inorganic compound semiconductors and in the electrical and optical properties of organic complexes and polymers. A program aimed at controlling and optimizing the electronic and materials properties of organic conductors and semiconductors uses a combination of synthesis, physical experiment, and theory to develop new organic solids and understand their basic electrical and optical properties. He is also exploring the physics and chemistry of electronically conducting polymers, focusing on specific polymers for charge storage applications that include batteries, electrochromic devices, and supercapacitors.

Recent advances in preparation techniques and improvements in architecture have provided significant opportunities to fabricate semiconductor devices and arrays to meet advanced sensor requirements. Research in this area has two components. The first physically characterizes group II-VI compound materials and evaluates the materials as infrared detectors or sources. The second part explores a new family of group III-V semiconducting detectors capable of operating as sensors from the visible into the ultraviolet region of the spectrum.
