Professor Kruger is interested in corrosion science and engineering and conservation science. His fundamental and applied research in corrosion focuses on the nature of thin films that exist on metal and alloy surfaces. These passive films control corrosion processes.
Recent research has attempted to gain increased knowledge of the properties of the passive films on iron and iron-chromium alloys by the application of neutron reflectivity and X-ray absorption spectroscopic techniques. Investigation of the breakdown of passivity, a process that leads to the initiation of localized corrosion (e.g., pitting) by a newly developed technique, dynamic imaging micro-ellips--ometry, which can examine the role of microstructure on the breakdown of passive films on aluminum-tantalum alloys. Prof. Kruger's research in conservation science lies in developing a better understanding of the degradation of artistic and historic artifacts and buildings. In this area, he has recently studied the degradation of ancient glass such as the type found in medieval stained glass windows. |
