Professor Green conducts research in the nondestructive characterization of materials and the nondestructive evaluation of structures. He is particularly interested in materials process control and in determination of the properties of materials and their state of reliability in civil, military and aerospace applications. Areas of technical interest are ultrasonics, acoustic emission, x-ray radiography, tomography, topography and diffraction including synchrotron radiation, electro-optical systems, light-sound interactions, thermography and vibrothermometry. Recent research has been directed at the application of x-ray tomography for imaging the internal structure of ultralightweight metals; x-ray topographic techniques for imaging defects in quartz, gallium-arsenide, and nickel single crystal turbine blades; non-contact ultrasonics for process control of composites and detection of detects in metals, ceramics, and composites; examination of aging aircraft structures; detection of defects in railroad rails and wheels; non-linear ultrasonic determination of the strength of adhesive bonds used in aircraft and marine applications; and ultrasonic determination of the load on steel reinforcing bars and cables.
