Welcome to HopSFA, the science fiction association at Johns Hopkins University! Our meetings run every Thursday at 8 PM in The Little Theatre in Levering. As a group, we celebrate the fun that is science fiction and fantasy by: * Playing games (RPG, board games, clay monster fighting, you name it...) * Dressing up as pirates, giving out limes on the breezeway to fight the plague that is SCURVY! * Assassinating each other semi-annually. * Going to fast food restaurants dressed as secret agents. * Watching movies (Army of Darkness comes to mind...) * Goth clubbing (think Nation...) * Going to science fiction, fantasy, and gaming cons (I-CON, DragonCon, etc...) * Attending the annual Maryland Rennaissance Festival in late September. * Planning JohnCon, our own annual science fiction convention, which takes place in early March. * Take a look around the site, and see if you want to join us. Sign up for our mailing list at hopsfa@jhu.edu! Nicholas Schwartz President, 2005-2007 Current AnnouncementsOct 18, 2007 - Clay Fighter 20XXThis Thursday at 8 PM at the standard meeting location of the Little Theater, above Levering, we shall once again undertake that semesterly battle of imaginations known as Clay'o'Rama.Mold the most horrid creatures that you can imagine into clay warriors and send them to battle with other equally nefarious creations. Just be prepared to defeat Sephiroth Snowman, for nothing is more hideous than an one-winged snow angel. - HopSFA Klein Bottle Oct 13, 2007 - Renn FaireThere was a magic Renn Faire trip this Saturday, but the mailing list was down, so not everyone who could go did.- HopSFA Mead Oct 11, 2007 - HopSFA Burn! HOPSFA SMASH!Join us this week, brethren, for our darkest hour.We will feast on sacrificial meat and mead cooked over open flame for a time, then on that same flame we will raise our heads high and howl, all while returning all that which has sinned against us to the Elder HopSFA Gods. Tests, stuffed animals, old papers, that weird thing in your fridge - all sacrifices will be accepted - the only Rule is that it must be something you feel must go away. This Thursday, at 8 PM, join us in our Holiest of Holy Days, at the AMR II barbecue pit. We will provide you with sustenance. - HopSFA Toastermeister Oct 4, 2007 - Impure Thoughts! Impure Thoughts!Greetings, citizens!Well, this week's meeting has been changed to my crucifixion, pending the terrible news I have for you all. I screwed up, and we can't have the sacrificial barbecue this week. Sorry guys, I didn't have time to arrange it this week. =/ And for the double whammy...due to none of our talented member base being free to drive anyone to Renn Faire this coming weekend, we'll be delaying that until next weekend as well. If this doesn't work for any of you, just say so - sadly, this means I personally can't come along, as I have a terribly important meeting all day next Saturday, but I will make it happen anyway...or at least whip the board until they do it. Once again, my apologies for this late notice. Anyway, this week will be a traditional HopSFA favorite, the Purity Test! Gather all ye mortals, for a long list we have of terrible sins, to determine the most depraved of our dark sun-fearing member base. 8 PM, the Little Theatre. You need nothing but yourself and a lot of terrible stories to tell. (Bonus points for anyone who can beat Anna as most innocent HopSFA member this year!) Also, though most of our meetings for the semester are planned, if anyone has any meeting requests, please feel free to ask me or one of the board - we always enjoy trying new things. Especially when they blend... - HopSFA Crucifixee Sept 27, 2007 - VOTE EARLY, VOTE OFTEN!It only comes once a year...It involves a list... It's run by a cruel judgmental asshole... That's right, kids! It's HopSFA's Things of the Year vote! Gather around the fire (metaphysical - if I actually catch anyone setting a fire, there will be Trouble), and join us in song to the elder HopSFA gods to guide us in our selection of Song, Deity, Movie, and Other. These things directly impact the rest of the year, so don't skip out, or you might find yourself enjoying some truly eye-bubbling things shortly. Two more things: JohnCon 2008's date has been set - it is now from March 14th through March 16th. Some of you will realize this is the weekend before spring vacation starts - this was the best weekend available, we promise. For more information about that, or if you're interested in helping run it this year, contact johncon2008@gmail.com or the HopSFA account (hopsfa@jhu.edu), or look at www.jhu.edu/johncon for details. Renaissance fair! We plan to go early in October this year (currently looking at the 6th of October), and we'd like to get a head count of interested parties so that we know how much transportation we need. For more details on which faire we're attending or to let us know you're coming, just email hopsfa@jhu.edu. Where were we... THAT TIME! (8 pm) THAT PLACE! (Little Theatre) BE THERE! (or you don't get to see me commit vote fraud) - HopSFA Senator Sept 20, 2007 - Deliciously Open GamesTremble, mortals! This very Thursday evening, you will bear witness to sights rarely beholden by mortals yet living! (living, "attending Hopkins", same thing, right?) Open Gaming Night will begin at 8 PM sharp, in the Little Theatre. For those of you not familiar with the activity, we bring piles of games, and entertain ourselves. The meaning of game is left as an exercise to the reader - if you want to bring a one-shot and run it, by all means. If you'd like to bring Fluxx and get a game going, I'd certainly play. Zombies is also a popular pastime, and I'm sure several of us have fond memories of a Risk 2040 game from a recent night. HopSFA will, of course, provide our traditional Munchkin and Star Munchkin games for all to use. Thursday, 8 PM, in the Little Theatre (the same place we met last week, for all of you who managed to find it). Be there on pain of nerd license revocation! - Rich HopSFA Duck of Many Things Postum Stercum: I've had one or two members come to me and express interest in joining a D&D campaign. If any of us on/near campus are running a game, please email me, and I'll forward it to the appropriate people.,br /> Sept 13, 2007 - Mongrels? No, Scavengers!Welcome, one and all, to the new and improved HopSFA 2007!This year, we've moved away from such quaint traditions as "gaming nights" and "feasting on human flesh" in favor of more enjoyable events -
Intrigued? Then come join us for our annual scavenger hunt! We break off into teams and rummage around campus for some of the oddest items ever to grace a list - previous lists have included:
If this sounds like your cup of tea, or if you're just bored, be in the Little Theatre at 8 PM this Thursday. If you're lost, go to the second floor of Levering (the building connected to the giant glass pavilion), and look for lots of noisy people. - El Cthulhrich N.B. JohnCon Lost and Found:Found: one jacket, one video game controller, one universal remote Lost: Final Fantasy X, one PS2 video cable (black) If you believe that one of these items is yours, describe it to us and we'll get it back in your hands. Also, if you found yourself with an extra copy of FFX or an extra controller after JohnCon, let us know that too and we'll return them to the rightful owners. Thanks!
