CultureFest Returns to Homewood to Showcase Diversity of Talents

By Amy Cowles
Homewood

CultureFest returns to the Homewood campus this week with a 10-day schedule of events providing insight into the various cultures that blend to form the Johns Hopkins community.

The 19th annual student-run festival will kick off at noon on Thursday, Nov. 10, in Levering's Glass Pavilion with remarks by Ray Gillian, assistant provost and director of the Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Office, and will feature performances from the Saint Veronica Youth Steel Drum Band and Josh, a student group that performs various types of Indian dances. Light refreshments will be served.

Events continue through Saturday, Nov. 19, and include the Culture Show, featuring performances by several student cultural groups, at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, in Shriver Hall Auditorium; the Night Market, offering a variety of ethnic foods and student demonstrations at 7 p.m., on Sunday, Nov. 13, in the Glass Pavilion; and a health fair for the local Latino community on Thursday, Nov. 17, sponsored by Salud, a student-run initiative for Hispanic/Latino health.

To illustrate this year's theme, "Through Our Eyes," CultureFest organizers will distribute disposable cameras to students so they can take pictures of their campus community. The photos will be posted in Levering and the Mattin Center to help everyone see the Homewood world through the eyes of its students.

"We hope that this year's CultureFest clearly reflects the diversity at Johns Hopkins University and the surrounding neighborhood," said Jason Lee, a junior majoring in neuroscience who is co-chairing the festival with Isimenmen Oribabor, a junior majoring in public health studies.
