Sample curriculum: Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and M.A. in Physics

Graduate students enrolled in the ME Ph.D. program can apply to receive a M.S. in Physics after fulfilling the Physics requirements for Masters of Science. These are a total of 6 one-semester graduate-level courses (171.415, 416 included), if a student can waive the prerequisite undergraduate courses.

Assuming that a student would have to take 2 prerequisite undergraduate courses, a possible sequence would be:

• 171.303           Introduction to Quantum Mechanics
• 171.312           Statististical Physics and Thermodynamics
• 171.415           Mathematical Methods for Physicists
• 171.601           Theoretical Mechanics
• 171.603           Electromagnetic Theory
• 171.605           Quantum Mechanics
• 171.626           Statistical Methods for Physics and Astronomy
• 171.703           Statistical Mechanics

With these (or equivalent set) of courses the student can petition the Physics and Astronomy Department for award of a M.S. degree in Physics.

Completion of Ph.D. thesis in ME requires additional courses according to ME rules.
