Student Employment Opportunities

The Office of Academic Advising often has student employment openings for tutors, study consultants, and note takers. Job listings are posted on the Student Employment Services webpage.

Tutors

Tutors are graduate or undergraduate students at JHU who work on course-specific material with students currently enrolled in the class. Tutors work with and lead small study groups approximately 3 - 6 hours per week. Supported courses for the fall semester include:

Study groups are scheduled during Learning Den hours: Sunday through Thursday, 6pm to 10pm. Tutors must be available to lead a group during Den hours and must be devoted to their assignment(s) throughout the semester, including reading period.

Eligible tutors must have earned an “A” in the specific JHU course being tutored. They must also have a GPA of a 3.0 or higher. (Exceptions maybe possible on a case by case basis.) The pay rate is $12.50 per hour for group assignments. All tutors must attend training before receiving tutoring assignments.

Study Consultants

Study consultants are either graduate students or seniors in good academic standing with effective study skills, organizational skills, and the desire to help other students. Consultants typically are matched with one to three students with whom they meet individually, one hour per week. The consultant and student determine when and where to meet. The consultant's pay is $12.00 per hour for time worked with student(s), training workshop, one small group meeting during the semester, and paperwork. Note Takers

Note Takers are hired through the Office of Academic Advising to provide class notes to students with disabilities. In order to receive notes, a student must submit official documentation to Dr. Richard Sanders in Academic Advising, and he will refer you to the Student Academic Assistance Coordinator to receive a note taker.

To qualify to become a note taker, you must attend every class for which you are taking notes, have well-organized notes, neat and legible handwriting, and must copy them in the Office of Academic Advising after every class. Arrangements will be made through our office to give the notes to the student(s) receiving them. Note takers are paid $75.00 per course per semester.
